We have received the sad news that Mark Manolios had a heart attack and passed away on the 17th of September. Our condolences go out to his family. He was a leading figure in the hockey industry, ran the Mark Manolios Sports stores in Zimbabwe for more than 40 years and was a regular visitor to South Africa.

In addition to making a name for himself in the trade, he had been to nine Olympic Games as a coach and administrator, was the coach for the Zimbabwean national men’s hockey side for 15 years, and also coached the Kenyan hockey team to a Bronze medal at the 1988 Six Nations tournament. In addition, he was also an international hockey umpire, a member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Equipment Committee, and a member and vice-president of the Zimbabwe Sports Commission.

He will be remembered for his friendly nature and he had many friends in the South African industry, some of whom have already indicated that they would like to contribute towards a memorial article in the next newsletter. If you would like to add a memory or impression of him, please contact Trudi.
