When the new jersey sponsor of the Stormers and Western Province is announced on Friday (14th) it will not be one of the two main Super Rugby team suppliers adidas or Canterbury. Retailers would already have been alerted to the identity of the new supplier, which we may only reveal on Friday.
With all five the New Zealand teams playing in adidas, the brand is currently the supplier of most of the Super Rugby teams. Canterbury sponsors two South African teams – Sharks and Lions – as well as the Sunwolves from Japan and Australia’s Waratahs.
PUMA sponsors the Bulls and until the new Stormers sponsor is officially named, the following brands also sponsor one team each: BLK (Rebels), Dynasty Sports (Reds), O’Neills (Brumbies) and Nike (Jaguares).
Canterbury is the most prolific sponsor of the local rugby unions, namely Sharks, Golden Lions, Free State Cheetahs, Pumas and SWD Eagles. Xco sponsors the Falcons/Valke and Griquas, PUMA the Blue Bulls and Fain (Eastern Province Kings), Flya (Border Bulldogs) and No Limits (Leopards) also one team each.
According to Darryl Kroll of Western Province Rugby the players opted for their new shirt sponsor because they will be the only local team sponsored by the brand.
